Bachelorette: Jenn Tran's Ex Devin Strader Was Arrested, Had Restraining Order From Ex-Girlfriend in Past
View Date:2024-12-23 16:46:12
Details about Devin Strader's allegedly less-than-rosy past are coming to light.
The 28-year-old—who called off his engagement with Jenn Tran shortly after proposing to her on the Bachelorette finale—was arrested for allegedly burglarizing an ex-girlfriend's Louisiana home in 2017, according to legal documents obtained by Entertainment Weekly Sept. 17.
At the time, Strader's ex—who remains unnamed in the filing—told officers in an arrest warrant affidavit from Baton Rouge Police Department that she returned from being out of town to find her home burglarized and a diamond necklace gifted to her by the Bachelor Nation alum missing, per the outlet.
And the woman also cited other allegations against Strader, who she said lived two doors down from her at the time. In the filing, she told police that Strader had showed up to her house "banging on the door several times and screaming at her." Plus, she accused him of coming out of his house once and "laughing at her" when she got a flat tire.
And the incidents allegedly didn't end after Strader's ex received a protective order against him. After she got a restraining order, Strader allegedly "made a fire out in the street" with what appeared to be the legal documents, the woman said in the affidavit.
After the affidavit was filed, Strader was arrested on burglary charges, Entertainment Weekly reported. He wound up pleading guilty to charges of criminal trespass and simple criminal damage to property of less than $500, receiving one year of unsupervised probation, per the outlet.
E! News reached out the Baton Rouge Police Department and ABC for comment. A rep for Strader could not be reached.
In light of his charges being uncovered, a production source shared that ABC was not aware of Strader's restraining order ahead of his casting in The Bachelorette.
"We take the safety of our contestants very seriously and make every effort to conduct thorough diligence," the source said in a statement to E! News Sept. 17. "As exhaustive as our vetting process is, this protective order did not surface in our searches."
And while Strader has yet to publicly address his legal case, the freight company manager recently defended his decision to break up with Tran in a 15-minute phone call shortly, which was revealed in the emotional Bachelorette reunion special, After The Final Rose.
“I needed that," he explained in a 13-minute video posted to his Instagram Sept. 10 that has since been deleted, "for my own happiness."
Emphasizing that he didn't intend to "denounce Jenn in any way" or "say anything negative about her," Strader closed out his message by addressing his ex-fiancée directly, saying, "I really, really am sorry for the way things played out. My intentions were to never hurt you, and I'm sorry for that hurt that I've caused."

Jenn Tran suggested the red flags started to pop up shortly after her proposal to Devin Strader in Hawaii—like, the next day.
“The day after we got engaged, the first thing he asked the producers was, ‘How long do people stay together?’” she said on the Sept. 9 episode of the Bachelor Happy Hour podcast. “I was like, ‘You’re already anticipating that we’re breaking up?’ I didn’t think anything of it at the time, but I flagged it as a really weird question to ask. Like, why would you ask that?”
However, Jenn noted this wasn’t the only moment that gave her pause. The season 21 lead shared that, during their fantasy suite date, she and Devin talked about moving to California in the future. In fact, Jenn said she relayed this information to her BFF Nicole when she introduced Devin to her family during the finale.
So, the reality star expressed her surprise when he allegedly backtracked during one of their happy couple weekends (a.k.a. when couples secretly meet up after the show to spend time together without spoiling the series for fans).
“In the happy couple with Devin after we got engaged," she added on the podcast, "he was like, ‘Oh, I didn’t know you told Nicole that we would be moving to California. I don’t actually want to do that.'"
Jenn alleged this wasn't the only time Devin backed out during their long-distance romance. She also said he didn't text, call or fly out to see her as often as she expected and that she questioned how much effort he was putting into the relationship.
"There would just be so many instances in which I wouldn’t hear from him for a whole day or a whole evening," the physician assistant student stated on Bachelor Happy Hour. "It’s like, ‘I don’t need to be talking to you all the time.' But I don’t know, it was just weird."
For his part, Devin called Jenn's comments about the amount of love and effort he displayed after their engagement as "false claims" and insisted his feelings on the show were real.
"I know that’s getting confused by a lot of people based off of Jenn saying that I pulled away immediately after Hawaii," the freight company owner said in a since-deleted video posted to Instagram Sept. 10. "But I actually only ever pulled away and started becoming distant post-breakup. And not just right after our breakup, we’re talking about almost the end of the month breakup."
He also said it was hard to watch himself "play second" to runner-up Marcus Shoberg on the show and that he wasn't Jenn's "first choice."
"I don't fault her for the feelings that she had towards Marcus," Devin added, "but I wasn't informed of that even during our relationship."
But in a Sept. 10 interview on Off the Vine With Kaitlyn Bristowe, Jenn said she wouldn't have "chosen anybody different."
Jenn and Devin split in early August. But even before then, she knew something was off.
During the Bachelor Happy Hour podcast, Jenn recalled how Devin "was not super happy about the the engagement" and how she'd agreed to take the pressure off of getting married right away by just dating—saying they planned to tie the knot after two years.
However, things soon took a turn.
"Things were just not good," she continued. "We were fighting, not making any compromises, which is bad. I had sat him down. I was like, ‘Let’s talk about this. What’s going on here?’ He basically said, ‘I’m just not happy anymore.’ He’s like, ‘Some days I wake up and I just don’t feel it.’ I was like, ‘What do you mean by that?’ He was like, ‘Somedays I wake up and I just don’t love you.'"
Jenn said she left the conversation sobbing but that Devin comforted her and offered to do couples counseling.
"I was like, OK, there’s hope I think," she shared. "He wants to go to couples counseling. He doesn’t want anything to change. He loves me. OK, great. We’ll work on his feelings."
But days later, Jenn continued on the podcast, they got into a fight about their happy couple weekend—with her saying Devin would book the latest flight to the destination and the earliest flight out.
Still, she thought they had worked things out. That is until Jenn asked if he wanted to talk on the phone following the airing of one of her Bachelorette episodes and she received a "very cryptic text."
"He’s like, 'Let’s talk tomorrow. This is a conversation we’ll have tomorrow at the happy couple,'" Jenn said on Bachelor Happy Hour. "I was like, ‘I don’t like what that means. Just call me now. Let’s just talk about it.’"
So, they hopped on the phone. As Jenn put it, "He was like, 'I don’t feel this anymore. I don’t want to be in this relationship anymore.' It’s not working.'"
She said they had a 15-minute call the next day where he allegedly told her, "'I can't say sorry anymore. Like, I'm done.'"
As for Devin's side, he said in his Instagram video that there were "multiple different occassions" where he tried to have the breakup conversation with Jenn in-person.
"I did try to meet up with her. I did try to go to the happy couple," he added. "And she did not let me, saying that she didn’t deserve to go if it was just going to be a breakup. I didn’t know what else to do. She kind of forced my hand."
And while Jenn said Devin was the one who no longer wanted to work on their relationship in couples counseling, he said they had gone to a few sessions together but that she fired their therapist without telling him.
In his video, Devin insisted he and Jenn had "multiple different conversations regarding the breakup" after their split.
"At no point did I ever leave her in the dark," the former contestant added in his Sept. 10 post, "and I was very open and honest about everything that I stood for and especially where my heart was in that time and place."
Devin said he distanced himself from Jenn near the end of August because he didn't want to be "leading her on," noting their last talk on the phone was about two weeks before After the Final Rose. However, he said he thought they were on good terms based on texts he received from her a week before and the day of AFR.
Meanwhile, Jenn tells a different story.
"We hadn't been talking that week," she said on the Sept. 12 episode of The Viall Files. "And the week before that, I got some very mean messages from him and we were not on good terms. Because I had asked to talk to him without the cameras, and he had agreed and then suddenly ghosted me and suddenly was not on the same page as me."
"That's not OK for the first time to be seeing your ex-fiancé on a stage," she later added, "and he denied me of that right to have a conversation with him before that."
As Devin recalled in his video, he didn't know what had been discussed before he walked onto the AFR stage Sept. 4, and he thought he and Jenn were in a good place. So, he was surprised to find out, to put it simply, they weren't.
"Frankly I was stunned and frankly I was shocked and had no words at the way that our relationship was being depicted on TV," he added. "It was absolutely asinine. It was really, really disheartening to hear the way Jenn described it because it wasn’t true and we both knew it wasn’t true. But I didn’t want to fight with her."
But Jenn isn't sure what Devin had expected.
"What did he think was gonna happen?" she asked on Nick Viall's podcast. "Was I just gonna shake his hand and say, 'OK, have a good day, like, nice knowing you.'"
Jenn also noted she wasn't blindsided by ABC showing her proposal after her tearful talk about the split.
"They're very conscientious of my feelings around that day and how anxious I was," she said on Off the Vine With Kaitlyn Bristowe. "So I was walked through every single part of that day. They tried to make me feel as comfortable as possible. But I didn't know how emotional I was going to be."
And ultimately, Jenn is glad Devin saw the clip.
"I wanted him to watch that moment and to realize how badly he had hurt me," she added. "Because I don’t know in what world somebody can get down on one knee and promise your life to somebody and then the next day not actually mean those things."
During AFR, Jenn called Devin out for waiting so long to tell her how he felt. And while he said he did "come clean" about having doubts after the show, he admitted he “was regretfully late."
Jenn also brought up how Devin followed and then unfollowed Bachelor Nation's Maria Georgas—who said she turned down the opportunity to be the season 21 Bachelorette after appearing on Joey Graziadei's season of The Bachelor with Jenn—after their split.
In his Instagram video, Devin said he took "full accountability" for the social media move—noting it was an "emotionally charged decision" he made after a post-breakup fight with Jenn and that he apologized to her.
"Reflecting back, I do realize that I did make a poor decision and I shouldn't be playing with people's feelings, especially when it's regarding their emotions," Devin, who said he followed several Bachelor Nation accounts, admitted. "I shouldn't also be following people that I have no relationship with whatsoever. I don't know Maria, I've never met Maria, I've never met up with Maria and I will never follow Maria."
In a Sept. 6 TikTok, Maria said she wasn't aware Devin followed her until after he backtracked and that she never followed him—adding she had "nothing to do with the ending" of his relationship with Jenn.
After Devin released his Instagram video—which featured his private texts with Jenn—she issued a response.
"I have not seen the video, and I don’t plan on it," she shared on The Viall Files. "I know what happened. I don’t need to watch a 13-minute video on it, and he’s wasted already six months of my life. I’m not gonna give him another second let alone 13 minutes."
And Jenn said she has "no idea" why Devin would do this.
"When you get engaged to somebody, when you’re dating somebody, your first thought is never, 'Oh my gosh, these texts might actually be blasted for the whole world to see,'" she added. "That is such an invasion of privacy."
Ultimately, Jenn said she felt "so betrayed, so disrespected and just upset and disappointed."
"I don’t have a problem with him going out there and saying what he needs to say," she clarified. "But I have a problem with him invading my privacy and releasing texts without telling me, without just giving me notice....He conveniently blurred out certain things but forgot to blur out other things that were very, very private. It’s like my mom’s on the internet dude."
After deleting the video, Devin apologized.
“I deeply am so sorry for showing sensitive information from the bottom of my heart,” he wrote in part of a since-deleted Sept. 10 Instagram Story post. “That was not my intention. My only intention is to show the relationship from my perspective.”
Jenn also addressed a viral video of Devin hanging out with another woman after their split.
"Obviously, there’s a video circulating around of him in New York with this girl," she said on Bachelor Happy Hour. "That was, I think, two weeks before AFR and we were broken up at that point. However, we had been talking. We had been talking about meeting up and seeing where things go, seeing if we could work on this, seeing if we can end things on good terms, or whatever it was."
Because, as Jenn reiterated, she "deserved a conversation in-person."
"I wanted that conversation in-person and not to have to do that on live TV," she added. "He was leading me on to believe that there was hope and there was something there the whole month. And then he’s out in New York with this girl. To my knowledge it’s one of his ex-girlfriends."
In fact, Jenn said she had been warned about the unnamed woman shortly after her engagement to Devin.
"I did get a DM when I came back from the show and somebody had warned me about this girl and I didn’t believe it," she continued. "I was like, ‘I love Devin. He would never do that to me.’ Now I’m kicking myself for not looking into that DM."
Devin has not publicly addressed the video. E! News has reached out for comment but has yet to hear back.
