David Schwimmer shared this photo in honor of Matthew Perry: 'It makes me smile and grieve'
View Date:2025-01-09 18:42:29
David Schwimmer is the latest "Friends" cast member to honor his late co-star Matthew Perry, who died Oct. 28 at 54.
Schwimmer posted a still photo of the two from the show on Instagram – in "Miami Vice"-inspired outfits – in mourning to the actor.
"Matty, Thank you for ten incredible years of laughter and creativity. I will never forget your impeccable comic timing and delivery," he captioned the photo Wednesday. "You could take a straight line of dialogue and bend it to your will, resulting in something so entirely original and unexpectedly funny it still astonishes.
"And you had heart. Which you were generous with, and shared with us, so we could create a family out of six strangers," he said.
Schwimmer said the photo, taken from the Season 5 episode "The One with All the Thanksgivings," is "one of my favorite moments" with Perry.
"Now it makes me smile and grieve at the same time," he continued.
Jennifer Anistonreflects on 'Friends' co-star Matthew Perry in emotional tribute: 'Chosen family'
The photo features Perry's Chandler Bing in a white suit and red shirt and Scwimmer's Ross Geller in a blue suit and yellow shirt in a 1980s flashback scene.
Schwimmer ends his tribute with an iconic "Friends" reference.
"I imagine you up there, somewhere, in the same white suit, hands in your pockets, looking around—' Could there BE any more clouds?'" he wrote.
'Friends' cast Matthew Perry tributes
Co-stars Matt LeBlanc, Courteney Cox, Jennifer Aniston and Lisa Kudrow have also shared their own emotional individual tributes. All six "Friends" released a statement a few days after Perry's death to share their grief and pay tribute: "We are all so utterly devastated by the loss of Matthew. We were more than just cast mates. We are a family."
Perry co-starred on the career-defining "Friends" sitcom for the entire 10-season run of what was then TV's No. 1 comedy, and appeared in all 234 episodes.
Matthew Perry death: Investigation, foundation and more
Perry was found dead in a jacuzzi at his Los Angeles home last month, according to authorities. TMZ was the first to report the news. Nicholas Prange, a Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman, confirmed the death, saying city firefighters responded "to find an adult male unconscious in a stand-alone jacuzzi. A rapid medical assessment, sadly, revealed the man was deceased prior to first responder arrival. The circumstances are under investigation by LAPD and the LA County Medical Examiner."
In 2022, Perry opened up about life behind the scenes of the sitcom, chronicling his battle with alcohol and drugs in his memoir, "Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing" Perry wrote with candor and compassion and showed his dedication to continue fighting a near-fatal battle.
Since his death, a foundation established in Perry's name will help those struggling with addiction. The Matthew Perry Foundation, announced less than a week after the actor's death, will continue Perry's "enduring commitment to helping others struggling with the disease of addiction."
A coroner's report and toxicology exam for Perry is expected in the coming weeks.
